Dapper Dogs

We men have a special connection to dogs. A long time ago, the first man and wolf decided that it would beneficial for both species to come together. The wolf hunted with man and the wolf ate with man. This  connection that has been in place since our hunting and gathering days from a millennia ago.

The wolf, ancestor of the modern dog, has been by our side transforming into many different shapes and sizes. According to many studies, a dog understands us more than a chimpanzee from an early age. They follow our subtle commands that no other animal without a connection would have. Our dogs are happy and always willing to please. They are by our feet during a game, while we exercise, and maybe help us out during a date.

The dog will also listen to you without judging or talking back. Men with a dog have been know to live longer than men without a furry best friend. You will have to put in work early on to train your dog, but after the first few months its a cakewalk and totally worth it. Dogs have been known to go as far as saving their human best friends when in need. There are many reasons why dogs have earned the title of Man’s Best Friend and these are just a few. Dogs are John Dapper approved as the only friend suitable for a man.

Here’s our list of the most dapper dogs:

Akita

Known to be a quiet dog (called the “Silent Hunter” in Japan), the Akita has great guarding instincts and will let you know if an intruder breaks into your house. Akita temperament can range from calm to bouncy and aggressive, so obedience training is a must . Akitas like to be “pack leader,” so if you want a harmonious household, make sure you train. The dog is cat like in grooming itself, but you should still brush them daily. Daily exercise is also a must. The movie Hatchi represents the breed very well in that the dog is very loyal to its family. Sizes range from 24 to 28 inches tall at the shoulder.

Beagle

Beagles are happy little dogs that are great as a family pet. They are also favored for their compact size and short, easy to care for coat. They are natural dog and human companions due to their years living in packs. Funny and curious, these dogs will follow their noses–which can lead to some trouble if not worked out regularly. This breed is one of the most popular in the US because of its personality, love of kids, and for being Snoopy. Most are 15 inches tall or under.

Doberman Pinscher

A product of German tax collector Louis Doberman, this dogs original purpose was to safe guard money and his owner. The Doberman Pinscher is energetic, watchful, fearless and obedient. He will alarm before he backs up his warning, while staying affectionate, obedient, and loyal to its owner. This breed requires regular exercise, but needs only minimal grooming for his short coat.  Great looking dog with a muscular physique, great endurance, and speed. Obedience training is a must with this dog. Ranging in size from 24 to 28 inches tall at the shoulder.

Weimaraner

Another German product. This one is called the “Grey Ghost” and is lauded for his ability to work with great speed, fearlessness, and endurance when on the hunt. One of the great things about the Weimaraner is that they are easily trainable, friendly and obedient. This breed loves children and runs with his family’s pack. Grooming is low due to his short coat. Average size: 23 to 27 inches tall at the shoulder.

Bull Terrier

The best thing about the Bull Terrier is that they become very attached to their owners and families. They will not thrive alone so this dog is great as a companion to the owner who will want them around. This dog loves children but like many bull breeds, obedience training is necessary. You must also remember to not over stimulate them around younger children. They have short coats but require a lot of care because they need tons of daily exercise or else they will tear up everything in sight. The Bull Terrier is like a little three year old kid, playful and funny. No size standard, but most stand 21 to 22 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 50-70 pounds.

Bloodhound

Bloodhounds are very affectionate and loving but will take charge if you let them. You must give them loving care but you must also be the boss in your household. Bloodhounds should be groomed weekly to eliminate dead hair and facilitate a routine that will help them look, feel, and smell better.  They are working dogs so give them work. One of the oldest dogs with a  blood line that can be traced to before the crusaders, hence the name: Bloodhound. Ranging in size from 23 to 27 inches tall at the shoulder.

Bullmastiff

The Bullmastiff is docile and sweet-natured yet fearless and confident. They are natural guardians of the home and with a face like theirs, barking is not needed. They may look scary to outsiders, but they are  fun and aloof with family. Traditional obedience training may not be necessary for this breed since they are independent. Bullmastiffs live happily in a house or apartment because they don’t need much exercise or grooming. The most famous Bullmastiff Rocky’s Buckiss. Ranging in size from 24 to 27 inches tall at the shoulder and 100 to 130 pounds.

Basset Hound

The Basset Hound is sweet and has a gentle disposition making him a great companion for any man. His short coat requires minimal grooming so it means less work for you. New owners should be prepared for a dog that actively follows scents while outside or on walks. Even though they have short legs, they can travel far–so make sure your gates or doors are closed. Its big ears, long bodies, short legs, and heavy body give them a unique but dapper look. Height should not exceed 14 inches tall at the shoulder.

Bulldog

Bulldogs are excellent family pets because they are great with children and are generally friendly with everyone. Not really a guard dog, but will be alert when not sleeping. They also tend to be gentle and protective, requiring minimal exercise. Their short nose makes them prone to overheating in warm weather so they are mostly an indoor dog. The bulldog will fart like a man, and snore like one too. They make a  great ladies magnet while they are puppies and this trend usually continues until adulthood. The bulldog is hard headed and is associated to a man because of this characteristic. The bulldog is courageous and insensitive to pain which makes them good with kids. Ranging in size from 40 to 50 pounds.

American Bulldog

This breed is commonly mistaken for a Pit Bull but is a distinctly different breed. American Bulldogs are very smart and loving toward their family. They can also be great with children and nannies if socialized from an  early age. This dog is very confident, social, and active.  American Bulldogs also bond strongly with their owners and are really smart, which makes them easily trainable. Very loyal and always willing to please its owner, this dog will watch TV at your side just to make you happy. This is as close to a great friend any man can possibly have. This breed has an extremely high pain tolerance which helps them with children, tracking, working, guarding, and pulling. This dog will be a best friend for life–once you try one you will never try another breed. This dog is the most recommended by John Dapper!

If you would like to email us pictures of yourself and your best friend having fun (watching a game, eating, working, playing, etc.), we will post them up on JohnDapper.com for everyone to enjoy.
